Vincent Furnier, professionally known as Alice Cooper, is a rock singer and songwriter whose career spans 60 years. With a raspy voice and a stage show that features numerous props and stage illusions, including electric chairs, pyrotechnics, and dueling swords, Cooper is considered by many music journalists and peers to be "The Godfather of Shock Rock." He's drawn equally from horror films, vaudeville and garage rock to pioneer a macabre and theatrical brand of rock designed to shock audiences.

Originating in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1964, "Alice Cooper" was originally a band with roots extending back to a band called the Earwigs, consisting of Furnier on lead vocals and harmonica, Glen Buxton on lead guitar, and Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar and backing vocals. By 1966, Michael Bruce joined the three on rhythm guitar, and Neal Smith was added on drums in 1967. The five named the band "Alice Cooper," and Furnier eventually adopted it as his stage pseudonym. In 1969, they released their debut album with limited chart success.

Breaking out with the 1970 single "I’m Eighteen” and the third studio album, “Love It to Death,” the band reached their commercial peak in 1973 with their sixth studio album, “Billion Dollar Babies.” After the band broke up, Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper and started a solo career in 1975 with the concept album “Welcome to My Nightmare.” Over his career, he’s sold over 50 million records. Cooper has experimented with numerous musical styles, mainly glam rock, hard rock, heavy metal, and glam metal, but also new wave and industrial rock. He helped shape the sound and look of heavy metal and has been described as the artist who “first introduced horror imagery to rock’n’roll and whose stagecraft and showmanship have permanently transformed the genre.

He's also known for his wit offstage, with the Rolling Stone Album Guide calling him the world’s most “beloved heavy metal entertainer.” Away from music, Cooper is an actor, golfing celebrity, and, since 2004, a radio DJ with his classic rock show “Alice’s Attic.” Vincent Furnier was born in 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He was named after his uncle. His father was an evangelist in The Church of Jesus Christ, and his paternal grandfather was a leader and later president of the church organization.

What religion is Alice Cooper?

Although he initially didn’t speak publicly about his religious beliefs, Cooper is now vocal about his faith as a born-again Christian. In an interview, Cooper shared how God is instilled in his daily routine, saying, “I’m up before the sun; 5 a.m. is my time. Straight out of bed, make a cup of coffee, grab my Bible, then spend the next hour reading and praying. I read a couple of chapters a day,” he continued. “This is my 12th reading. It puts me in a positive frame of mind.” Cooper also credited God with helping him get past his alcohol addiction.
