In 1971 the Supreme Court established in Lemon v. Kurtzman what became known as “the Lemon test.” In order to be constitutional, any religious practice sponsored within government-operated schools must: have a secular purpose; must neither advance nor inhibit religion; and must not result in an excessive entanglement between government and religion.
