In 1980, the Supreme Court ruled that the Ten Commandments cannot be posted in classrooms. In 1983, President Reagan proposed a Constitutional Amendment to allow school prayer, but Congress failed to act. In 1985, the Supreme Court moved again, striking down an Alabama law requiring schools to have a moment of silent meditation at the beginning of the day. In 1987, the Supreme Court overturned a state law requiring a balanced treatment of creation science and evolution. In 1992 and 2000, the Supreme Court banned public prayers at graduation ceremonies or over school public address systems prior to athletic games.
