Katharine was born to a wealthy family in Philadelphia in 1858 and inherited a huge fortune when her parents died. She chose to use the money to become a missionary and minister to the American Indians in the Dakotas, establishing schools, providing food and clothing and recruiting priests to move to the area. Once the missions were running smoothly, she moved to Santa Fe and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. St. Katharine also founded Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic university for African Americans. Her feast day is celebrated on March 3rd, and she is the patron saint for racial justice.
