Why a Christian Has Nothing to Fear on Halloween

A chance to share God's love!

Halloween is a time when we can see neighbors with children that we may never run into at other times. Give out truths of God's love connected with the candy that you pass out. It can be as easy as little cards that say John 3:16.

Don’t play the Pharisee. As believers, sin should make us uncomfortable, as should the occult aspects of this holiday. But instead of judging, offer real hope.

Remember when you were a child? What would you have thought of a neighbor who gave you no trick-or-treat candy, but instead a tract on why you were going to hell? Odds are, you would have avoided that neighbor from then on.

So, get a reputation for giving out the best treats in the neighborhood. Full-size candy bars with a card that says “God loves you!” and a phone number for a free church bus ride to Sunday school.

Celebrate the Saints!

Dress up as a champion of the faith and as you give out candy, make the kids guess who you are. If they have no idea, tell them – in 20 words or less.

What an encouraging way to spend Halloween celebrating the lives of Christians who have fought the good fight, faced death, and now enjoy victory with Christ. Their witnesses inspire us all to keep going even when the darkness closes in, when death threatens, or when evil looks like the better option.

Be sure to tell the trick-or-treaters that tomorrow is All Saint’s Day – and give them a card that tells the story of whichever saint you’re portraying – Augustine or Joan of Arc or Stephen the Martyr or St. Nicholas – particularly a card with a strong message of God’s love.
