Canine Connection

The truth is he picked me out.
Lots of dogs to choose from,
but his eyes said,
"We belong together."

Sitting in my lap,
a resident of my heart.
He gives me more
than I ever knew I needed.
My comforter,
licking tears away.
My caretaker,
never leaving my side when I'm sick.
My best friend always,
he gives me unconditional love.

Thank You for bringing us together.
The house is empty now.
I cry out in despair and turn to You now.
You can quiet me.
Let me rest in Your being like he rested in mine.

You, who can turn sorrow into reflection,
reflection into resolve, resolve into acceptance,
help me remember all the unspeakable joy
he brought into my life.
Help me work through my grief
to Your place of perfect peace.

I feel Your presence near, reassuring me.
I rest in the knowledge: No one could have loved him more.
