There has been a lot of fear and anxiety around the Cardinal Grand Cross, and that’s understandable. The Uranus-Pluto Square is already the biggest astrological meat-grinder of our time, and adding the amplifying force of Jupiter in Cancer and Mars in Libra to that mix certainly didn’t help things much. But I try to be an optimist, and often as not it’s true that the things that are being broken down in your life needed breaking, and that there is always the chance to build something bigger and better from the wreckage.

The Cardinal Grand Cross consists of squares and oppositions, and those are naturally difficult aspects that get a person’s attention. Following the principle that “good news is no news,” it’s easy to overlook the fact that for the last several months, Jupiter and Saturn have been in a trine to each other. That means that no matter what chaos and uncertainty has been going on for many of us, there is also a rare opportunity to build something good from it all.

Case in point: the recent reemergence of Monica Lewinsky.

***

For those of you who don’t recall, and for those of you who heard entirely too enough much about the matter at the time and blocked it from your mind: Monica Lewinsky was the center of a sex scandal involving President Bill Clinton which led to his attempted impeachment in 1998 (If, by the way, you were wondering when it was, exactly,  that the American government began its decline into long and pointless political bickering over stupid petty crap that was going to go nowhere anyway instead of getting things done, it’s easy to point to the Clinton impeachment as the beginning of that).

You can look up all the details elsewhere if you like, but here’s the gist: The President cheated on his wife with a 22-year-old intern. The opposition attempted to get President Bill Clinton thrown out of office over it. The attack was led by serial adulterer Newt Gingrich, who was in the middle of his own affair at the same time he was leading the impeachment attempt.

Seriously kids: I’m not making this up!

Monica Lewinsky (born July 23, 1973, 12:21 PM San Francisco California) was the young woman involved in this whole mess. She confessed her affair with the President to someone who she thought was a friend, but she didn’t know that friend was recording the whole thing. Long story short: nothing was resolved, America returned to business as usual, and Monica Lewinsky’s life was essentially destroyed in public.

The scandal broke in January 1998, as transiting Saturn (which always blows a chill breath of reality onto anything it touches) rolled over Monica’s Mars in Aries (her sexual impulses) in the Seventh House (close partnerships) and opposed her Uranus in Libra in the first house. Throughout the next year, Saturn rolled over Monica’s Moon, which is the ruler of her Midheaven… indicator of the career and public status.

After all that was over, Ms Lewinsky hovered around the fringes of fame for a while, but any of her hopes of a life in public service were done. She eventually moved to London to study, and has generally stayed out of the limelight.

After a decade of not addressing the matter at all, Monica is back this week with an article in Vanity Fair magazine addressing her part in the scandal. This is all happening while the Cardinal Grand Cross is just entering range of affecting her natal Mars-Uranus opposition, but it is perhaps most telling that transiting Jupiter is now conjunct her Midheaven and Saturn is now trine her Midheaven. Monica is finally addressing her public image, and public reaction seems thus far to be fairly positive.

To most people, Monica Lewinsky will always be a punchline (if an ever more obscure one as the years go on). But it appears that she is finally coming forward to state her side of the story and rehabilitate her image. The Cardinal Grand Cross may have provided the provocation for that, but the Jupiter-Saturn trine is giving her the strength and the stability to have a good go at it.

May we all have such strength and good fortune when it comes to reconstructing something solid and positive from the mess we’ve made of our lives!
