Doechii, born Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, gained notoriety on TikTok in 2020 before ultimately becoming the third female to win Best Rap Album at the Grammys in 2025.
In addition to her Grammy award, Doechii has won an MTV Europe Music Award, a Billboard Women in Music award, and a UK Music Video award.
Doechii grew up in Tampa, Florida, and performed at an early age in ballet, tap dancing, and cheerleading. She participated in gymnastics, acting and soccer and belonged to the choir. Her father and uncle were both rappers, and her father recorded professionally. She planned to become a professional choral singer until a friend encouraged her to produce and release her music online as an independent artist.
She began her music career in 2016, releasing her debut song "Girls" on SoundCloud under the name Iamdoechii. She first gained recognition with her 2020 EP, Oh the Places You'll Go, when her single "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" went viral on TikTok in 2021. She also released Bra-Less, collaborated with Isaiah Rashad on "Wat U Sed," and toured with SZA.
Her 2024 mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, received critical acclaim and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, making her only the third woman to earn the honor.
In 2025, Doechii appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race and appeared on songs by Jennie and other major artists.
Is Doechii religious?
Doechii has said that while growing up, she was bullied to the point she considered suicide, but then received a vision from God that turned her life around.
She gave up drinking and said that God had promised the success she would later receive.
Doechii grew up in a Christian church in Tampa, Florida, first as a Baptist before evolving into other forms of Christianity. Her dad and her uncle were both rappers, one recording professionally.
She grew up on gospel and Christian music, and has released songs touching on her faith, including the song "God" with lyrics such as "We must come to recognize that God is an unlimited supply and that everyone has access . . . God does not run out of blessings . . . Someone else receiving a gift from God is not one taken away from you."
In her 2025 Grammy speech, Doechii said, "I bared my life. I've gone through much. I dedicated my life to sobriety. And God told me that I would be rewarded, and then He showed me just how good it can get."
