Melissa Arnette Elliot, also known as Missy Elliot, is a songwriter, rapper, and producer. She started her music career with the R&B girl group Sista in the mid-1990s and later became a member of the Swing Mob collective with her childhood friend Timbaland, with whom she worked on projects for artists like 702, Aaliyah, SWV, and Total. After several guest appearances and collaborations, Elliot started her solo career in 1997 with her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly," which spawned the top 20 single "Sock It 2 Me." The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the highest charting debut for a female rapper at the time.

Elliot's second album, "Da Real World," was released in 1999 and produced the singles "All n My Grill" and "Hot Boyz." The "Hot Boyz" remix broke the record for most weeks at number one on the US R&B chart and spent 18 weeks at number one on the Hot Rap Singles chart. After releasing "Miss E…So Addictive,” "Under Construction," and "This Is Not a Test," Elliot established an international career that brought hits like "Get Ur Freak On,” "Gossip Folks,” "One Minute Man," and "Work It." The latter won her a Grammy for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. In 2019, she released her first EP, "Iconology."

Elliot has been called the "Queen of Rap" by several media outlets. Her accolades include four Grammys, on top of selling over 40 million records worldwide. According to Billboard, she's the best-selling female rapper in Nielsen Music history. She was the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received the MTV VMAs Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for impacting the music landscape. In 2020, Billboard listed her at number five on the 100 Greatest Music Video Artists of All Time. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021, and in 2023, she became the first female hip-hop artist nominated and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Is Missy Elliot religious?

Missy Elliot identifies as a Christian. While speaking at an Essence Black Women in Music event, she described herself as a "walking testimony," saying, "Not everybody believes in God, but I'm a walking testimony. I might have been some people, but the God I serve is powerful, and if He weren't, I wouldn't be standing here today." In a separate interview with Marie Claire, the rapper described how she used to play church at her grandmother's house and sing different gospel songs.
