Sally Clare Kellerman was an American singer, author, and actress. She was born and raised in Long Beach, California, by her parents, Edith Baine and John “Jack” Helm Kellerman. Her mother was a piano instructor, and her father was a company executive at Shell Oil. Kellerman’s mother raised Sally and her older sister, Diana, in the Christian Scientist faith since she belonged to that religion.
Kellerman was best known for her character Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan, in the 1970s movie “M*A*S*H”. The film directed by Robert Altman was Kellerman’s breakthrough role and earned her a highly esteemed Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Her successful film and television career lasted for over six decades. The California native appeared on many hit television shows such as “The Twilight Zone” (1963), “Star Trek” (1966), and “90210” (2008).
Not only was Kellerman a talented actress, but also a gifted singer. At 18, She signed a record deal with Verve Records. Years later, her debut album was recorded in 1972. The actress and singer contributed many of her songs to film soundtracks.
In 2013, the actress released her book “Read My Lips: Stories of a Hollywood Life.” Her autobiography shared her fascinating journey of being a rising movie star in 1960s Hollywood.
