Alan Ladd, well-known actor, was discovered during his work in radio. Alan is remembered for his roles in movies like This Gun for Hire, The Glass Key, The Great Gatsby, and Shane. Alan’s desire to work in film blossomed early, and he spent time with United States Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit during World War II, the first military unit made up entirely of professionals from the film industry. He joined the Universal Pictures studio school for actors, but Universal decided he was “too blond and too short” at 5’ 6”, and they released him him – a decision they later came to regret when he was very successful for Paramount. In 1962 Ladd attempted suicide, and in 1964 he died from a reported overdose of alcohol and sedatives.
