Avril LaVigne was born in Canada, but moved to NYC at age 16, and later to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. She is from a deeply religious home and began singing in church at a young age.

Avril taught herself to play the guitar and began writing songs as a teenager, dropping out of high school after 11th grade and signing a record deal with Arista.

Avril LaVigne‘s music has been described as punk. With her trademark pink streaked hair, punk-style clothing, and her own fashion line, she is somewhat of a style icon. She was previously married to musician Deryck Whimbley, but they divorced and she married Chad Kroeger, frontman for the rock band Nickelback.
