Debra Messing was born and raised in New York City, and was very interested in theater acting early, including a number of high school productions. In college, her parents urged her to get a well-rounded education, branching her studies out from theater and drama. Messing beat out Nicolette Sheridan with her audition for her breakout role Grace Adler on the series Will & Grace. Ever the multi-tasker, Debra took on roles – including lead roles – in films during her time on the series, including Along Came Polly and The Wedding Date, and the lead role in the miniseries The Starter Wife, for which she won an Emmy.
