Chappell Roan is a pop singer and songwriter. Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, won a Grammy award in 2025 after the success of her debut studio album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess." The album spawned the hit singles "Good Luck, Babe," "Hot to Go," and "Pink Pony Club."

She is known for her campy, drag queen-type look and theatrical-style performances.

Roan was born in Willard, Missouri and has three younger siblings. Her mother is a veterinarian, and her father is a former naval reservist who has also helped manage the family's veterinarian practice. Roan's uncle is Missouri Republican State Representative Darin Chappell.

Roan began playing piano at the age of 10 and won her school's talent show at the age of 13. She then began uploading videos of herself singing cover songs on YouTube, and music companies began calling.

In 2017, Roan released her debut single, "Good Hurt," followed by her EP School Nights. She moved to Los Angeles in 2018 and began to live openly as a queer woman. Roan later began working with producer Dan Nigro. In 2020, she released "Pink Pony Club," which she said was inspired by a visit to a West Hollywood gay bar.

Despite the success, Atlantic Records dropped her in August 2020, leading Roan to pursue music independently while working odd jobs. USA Today ranked "Pink Pony Club" among the best songs of 2020, and Vulture named it "the Song of Summer 2021."

In early 2021, her progress stalled when Nigro focused on Olivia Rodrigo's career, leaving Roan struggling to find a new collaborator. She moved back to Missouri, continuing to work on her music while taking a drive-through job.

In 2022, Roan reunited with Dan Nigro and released Naked in Manhattan, her first song openly expressing same-gender attraction. NPR described the song as a "queer girl bop." Later that year, she released "Femininomenon" and "Casual," both gaining attention for their bold sound and personal lyrics.

Her 2023 debut album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," earned critical acclaim, fueled by the success of "Good Luck, Babe!" in 2024. That year, she performed at major festivals, joined Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour, and won Best New Artist at the Grammys. She used her speech to advocate for artists' rights.

What religion is Chappell Roan?

As a child, Roan attended a Christian church three times a week. Unable to reconcile her gay identity with the conservative religious beliefs of her family and church turned her off from organized religion and made her rebel against her upbringing.

Now, Roan says her relationship with religion is evolving and has acknowledged her diagnosis of bipolar disorder contributed to her restlessness growing up. She credits medication and therapy for helping her cope with new anxieties unlocked by her sudden success and life in the limelight.
