Joseph James Rogan is a podcaster, actor, TV host, UFC commentator, and comedian. His career as a comedian started in Aug. 1988 in Boston. After moving to LA in 1994, he signed a deal with Disney. The former comedian has made many appearances on tv shows such as “Hardball” and “NewsRadio”. He worked as a color commentator and interviewer for UFC in 1997. After his tv career took off, he created his comedy special in 2000 called “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday.” His tv career continued from 2001 to 2006 when he hosted the show “Fear Factor.” Rogan started his popular podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
Rogan was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 11, 1967. At age five, his parents divorced, and his father lost contact with him since he was seven. Rogan shared what he remembered from his childhood in an interview, “All I remember of my dad are these brief, violent flashes of domestic violence. But I don’t want to complain about my childhood. Nothing bad ever really happened to me. I don’t hate the guy.”
As a child, Rogan played Little League Baseball and later took up martial arts as a teenager. Growing up, Rogan suffered from self-esteem issues. He shared that martial arts “gave me not just confidence, but also a different perspective of myself and what I was capable of. I knew that I could do something I was terrified of, and that was really difficult, and that I could excel at it. It was a big deal for me”. Martial arts were “the first thing that ever gave me hope that I wasn’t going to be a loser. So I really, really gravitated toward it”. After turning 14, Rogan started training in karate and started Taekwondo the following year.
At age 19, he won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament in the lightweight category. After holding the winning title for Massachusetts full-contact state champion for four years in a row, he became a certified Taekwondo instructor. His fighting career came to an end at age 21 because he suffered from constant headaches frequent headaches and didn’t want to risk a severe injury.
Although Rogan currently identifies as Agnostic, he was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic school in first grade.
