Robert “Bob” Saget is an American actor, stand-up comedian, director, and tv show host. He rose to fame with his role of Danny Tanner on the hit ABC sitcom “Full House.” Saget reprised his iconic role on the reboot of the show “Fuller House.” From 1989 to 1997, the fan-favorite actor also hosted “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
The actor-director was born in Philadelphia to a Jewish family then moved to Virginia as a child. He was raised in the Jewish faith and education that came along with it. Saget found his love and talent for comedy in Temple Israel in Norfolk, VA. It was in Temple that he used comedy as a coping mechanism to handle the structure of Hebrew school better.
“Well, a lot of it was rebellion.” Saget explained in an interview, “In my Hebrew school training, I would spend more time trying to impress the girls in the class. I remember the Rabbi taking me up to his office and saying, ‘Saget, you’re not an entertainer; you have to stop doing this.’ I couldn’t stop.”
Saget shared that his Jewish upbringing left a significant impression on him. In an interview with the Atlanta Jewish Times, he expressed that his top three favorite Jewish comedians are Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, and Don Rickles. The former TV show host also stated that his mother Dolly and father Ben were inspirations for him.
The actor proclaimed that he still “loves the Jewish culture and religion” and is a supporter of enhancing the Jewish community and Israel.
