Grunge icon Eddie Vedder has long been known for his intense lyrics, angry stage presence, and thought provoking comments. While he has become a little more somber in his old age, his stance on religion hasn't changed. Early in his life Vedder experienced the realization that the father he had known all his life was not his actual biological father, between that and his upbringing with his parents' foster children, he found his way in life without much of a family identity. Not being raised in a religion led him easily to atheism as a way of looking at the world. While it is clear from his lyrics and interviews that he is very interested in religion, he is very unsure of its value both to society and to his own life.
