ON BIVOUAC in basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash., each of us had to dig a foxhole. It was supposed to be deep and narrow, but as I attempted to do it justice, mine got deeper and wider. The commanding officer finally walked over to me and, looking into the gaping hole, asked, “A tank trap, soldier?”
