Detection dogs have been used by the US Customs and Border Patrol since 1969. While their introduction into service was initially temporary, they’ve maintained a permanent part in the arsenal that defends our borders. Initially conceived as a stop gap measure to allow explosive detection technology to develop the CBP canine program has continued to thrive while its technological rival has never caught up. This is the story of CBP detection dogs from their humble beginnings to their unrivalled service in the present day.
