Years ago when I began my spiritual journey I had a hard time with the idea of God, surrendering and prayer. I had many long talks with my spiritual mentors. One day a friend told me this story and besides getting a good laugh it helped me see the futility in my resistance to letting go of my limiting beliefs.
A man was walking along a deserted road, against his friends advice. He was new to the area and there had just been a large rainstorm. It was pitch black, he could hardly see his hands in front of his face. Suddenly he slipped in the mud and plummeted off the cliff. He managed to grab onto the exposed root of an old tree and stop his fall.
He held on as long as physically possible. Then in desperation he finally he decided to pray. As soon as he asked for help the wind got quiet and he felt a sense of peace flow over him.
In the silence he heard a voice gently and lovingly say, “Let go.”
He thought about it for a moment and then asked, “Is there anybody else up there?”
In the morning his friends found him exhausted still hanging onto a root a few feet off the ground.
With love and aloha,
Susan
