As I was looking over WWI posters on Google Image to help illustrate some of Jane Addams’ arguments about opposition to war in my Twentieth Century American Political Thought class, I discovered this poster from WWI. Back then what counted as a genuine atrocity was something that would probably not even merit a news story today.
By comparison to this German outrage against some English sailors, the Bush administration’s current policies borders on what would have then been considered subhuman. And rightly so. Yet the British believed this event so outrrageous they used it as an example of “hatred” by the “Huns.”
