It just gets worse and worse. According to Retired Major Gen. Antonio Taguba, who oversaw the U.S. investigation into the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison, and who ought to know, the suppressed torture photos include pictures of men raping female prisoners and men raping men.
When I was growing up we were taught one big difference between the US and Nazi and Communist countries was that we did not torture. Stories of rape in prison camps were used to illustrate just how depraved these regimes were. Only utter monsters would do such things.
Conservative religious types were often (universally?) outraged when the Dixie Chicks said they were ashamed that George Bush was from Texas. Where is their outrage over what George Bush and Dick Cheney did to this country? Should we not all be ashamed they are from the United States?
This country’s moral worth, its legitimacy to serve in any sense at all as a role model for the good depends in my view in no small part on how the American people handle the sociopathic monsters who are responsible for this. So far, as a people, we are failing.
