UPDATE 12/21 – below

Like many people I’ve been torn both ways by the health care bill that Corporate America’s representatives in the Senate and White House are trying to give us.  If passed it would definitely help some people who are currently uninsured.  Definitely.  And that is not nothing.
But the precedent it establishes is a travesty of everything this country once stood for.  Hecate linked to the best single statement I’ve read as to why this bill should be defeated so long as any kind of mandate exists. After destroying any reasonable approach to the issue, these corporate Democrats are now holding the well-being of millions of Americans hostage.  If we agree to become serfs of corporate America, they’ll help us out.  Otherwise, we are SOL.
People who present us with such choices are beneath contempt if they know what they are doing, morally blind if they do not.
UPDATE
Glenn Greenwald has an excellent take on this issue as well – and the genuine difference between those supporting reform who want this abomination passed, and those of us who do not.
UPDATE
I keep shifting about on this bill.  Once they limited corporate profits it became a lot better.  Now Ezra Klein at the Washington Post has done a pretty good job of convincing me this bill is significantly better than what we have today.
