I’ve been predicting in these pages over the past couple of years that the balance of power in the world would soon be shifting away from the United States. I say that not because I lack a sense of patriotism, or because I “hate America” as Sean Hannity would say, but because I recognized a combination of astrological events that were tied closely to actual American behavior. You can read more about this in my Astrological State of the Union post from last year.
An article in the New York Times yesterday spells out the details:
By President Obama’s own optimistic projections, American deficits will not return to what are widely considered sustainable levels over the next 10 years. In fact, in 2019 and 2020 — years after Mr. Obama has left the political scene, even if he serves two terms — they start rising again sharply, to more than 5 percent of gross domestic product. His budget draws a picture of a nation that like many American homeowners simply cannot get above water.
For Mr. Obama and his successors, the effect of those projections is clear: Unless miraculous growth, or miraculous political compromises, creates some unforeseen change over the next decade, there is virtually no room for new domestic initiatives for Mr. Obama or his successors. Beyond that lies the possibility that the United States could begin to suffer the same disease that has afflicted Japan over the past decade. As debt grew more rapidly than income, that country’s influence around the world eroded. …
Mr. Obama has published the 10-year numbers in part, it seems, to make the point that the political gridlock of the past few years, in which most Republicans refuse to talk about tax increases and Democrats refuse to talk about cutting entitlement programs, is unsustainable. His prescription is that the problem has to be made worse, with intense deficit spending to lower the unemployment rate, before the deficits can come down.
One of the major cycles affecting the US over the past couple of years was the challenging square from Pluto to the Midheaven in the US chart. The Midheaven in the chart of a nation correlates to its reputation and standing in the world, and Pluto is the planet of destruction and regeneration. Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008 and began wreaking havoc in the structures that governments all around the world provide for its citizens, including banking and laws, and at that time Pluto began this cycle to the US Midheaven.
No wonder Obama is unpopular on both sides – the truth hurts. But I digress.
If we look back through history we can see how every transit of Pluto to the US Midheaven has corresponded with a major historical event that shifted the basis of power in the United States.
This current cycle completes an entire circuit of Pluto around the US chart which began back in 1762 to 1764 when Pluto last entered Capricorn. Of course, the US didn’t have a chart yet at that time (the birth of the US was after all in 1776) but Pluto’s entry into Capricorn resulted in the Treaty of Paris which essentially rearranged (Pluto) the political landscape (Capricorn) all over the world and resulted in the establishment of Britain as a worldwide empire. This consolidation of power in Britain set the wheels in motion for subsequent revolution in the colonies when the British government established a western boundary limit for the American colonists with the Proclamation of 1763. It’s an interesting coincidence that this period corresponds to a square from Pluto to what would later be the Midheaven of the chart of the United States.
The next transit phase of Pluto to the US Midheaven was the opposition when Pluto moved into Aries and transited the Nadir of the chart, signifying the heart of the people. This occurred in 1823 and resulted in the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine declared that any efforts by European nations to interfere with states in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as an act of aggression requiring US military intervention. This corresponds nicely to Pluto entering into Aries and increasing the aggressive defense of boundaries.
Pluto then moved into Cancer in 1913, forming a square to the US Midheaven. Pluto in Cancer began a challenge to the idea of “homeland” and family, both Cancerian concerns and resulted in the first Great War that spread throughout Europe. In the United States this correlated to the institution of the first national income tax when the 16th amendment was passed, but also to the signing of the Federal Reserve Act which shifted the power of money into a centralized bank. The Federal Reserve is a mysterious quasi-public cartel of private banks which has the power to control the money supply in the United States. Since money IS power, the Federal Reserve has been one of the most powerful entities in the US since this period.
The last Pluto transit to the Midheaven before the current one occurred in 1971 and 1972 when Pluto entered Libra and passed over the Midheaven, a transit we call a conjunction. That period corresponded to the Watergate break-ins but also the rise of revolutionary groups within the United States, especially on college campuses, protesting the Vietnam war. Perhaps more significantly, Nixon ended the gold standard in an act later called the Nixon Shock. Because money = power, any change to the economic system creates change and transformation to the political system and some analysts cite the end of the gold standard as the source of monetary volatility.
I should add that because the US Venus (which rules not only relationships but also values and money) is in a challenging square to the US Midheaven, issues of power and money are forever entwined in US politics, and every transit to the US Midheaven also affects the US Venus and therefore its alliances and relationship to economics.
Which brings us to current history and the combination of the square from Pluto in Capricorn to the US Midheaven. One of the side effects of the current economic crash in the US is that by buying up more US debt than any other nation, China has achieved a tremendous amount of control in our country as well as in the rest of the world. That’s a story for another article, but suffice it to say that as China takes more of a foothold in US power, US power decreases that much more. This has corresponded
with the 2006 retrograde turn of Mars in the US chart which has caused Americans to take a new look at how warfare (Mars) is used and with it, a growing distaste for the kind of imperialism that marked the first 200 years of national history.
