So what is beginner’s heart? I actually Googled the term. Not many results apply. I came up with it like I do poem titles ~ it seemed like a good idea, and like it would lead me somewhere. It’s how (and often why) I write: where will the writing take me? What will I learn?
Actually, it’s why I do most things. Certainly teaching, for instance. I teach to learn. I try to change up my class every semester, sometimes a completely new prep. Sometimes a completely new situation, even ~ as when I took over a dead colleague’s class, one begun w/a very different pedagogical slant than my own.
So that’s the real truth, I guess. I want to know, myself, what beginner’s heart looks like when it’s walking around on the ground, as the Army says. (n.b.: can you put beginner’s heart and the Army in the same sentence?) What does beginner’s heart feel like? Can you point to someone you think has it? And what about how to ‘get’ it? And most important: how will we know it when (and if) we find it…?
