The chorus of voices against Pastor Terry Jones’ plan to host “Burn a Koran Day” at his ironically-named Dove World Outreach Center church in Florida church tomorrow — Sept. 11, which coincides with the Muslim celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, the joyous culmination of Ramadan, this year — now includes Pope Benedict, President Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Angelina Jolie, Gen. David Petraeus, the VFW and other military/veterans groups who point out that this plan motivates Muslim terrorists and therefore endangers our troops abroad and ourselves at home.
There’s a pun in here somewhere about hell freezing over.
What’s interesting is that, especially among the politically conservative opponents of this book-burning stunt, people are now making the argument that this is just like Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s proposal to build Park51, the Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero: Yes, America grants us the freedom to do these things, but that doesn’t mean that we should.
Hmmm. Well, as Jon Stewart said last night, around the 2:15 mark of this Daily Show footage:
Get it? See the parallel? A Christian is an extremist for burning the Quran. A Muslim is an extremist by reading from it… too close to a place that their extremists burned. It almost makes no sense.
