Some of you know that I hold Patton Dodd in very high esteem, because his essay “Optimism Is Depressing” was so incredibly helpful when I was trying to make sense of all the folks around me who assured me that the antidote to my depression was found in the pages of “The Secret,” a radical interpretation of the law of attraction written by Rhonda Byrne. I doubted myself and castrated myself and then had my dog do the same because I couldn’t articulate what, exactly, in that book made me shudder. Until I read Patton’s essay.

Man, he was like Moses walking down the mountain with the God’s law, and I said, “Amen, Patton! Amen!”
