We’ve learned that eating foods high in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as getting plenty of  Omega 3 fats, can help with glaucoma.

There are other lifestyle changes you can make that will also help. One of the main things you can do is aerobic exercise.  Several studies have proven than running significantly decreases eye pressure. If you can’t run, you can do some other form of aerobic exercise. You can at least walk and work at increasing the number of steps you get in each day.

And there are things you can avoid.  Transfats and having too many Omega 6 fats compared to Omega 3s can make glaucoma worse.  Sugar is a bad guy, and so is grain. They are both inflammatory substances, which makes the pressure in the eye greater.  By the way, if you have any kind of chronic pain issue, you should avoid sugar and high glycemic foods.  The main source of your pain is usually inflammation and those things will make it worse.

So — if you have glaucoma, you should

  • Eat lots of raw vegetables and fruits
  • Take Omega 3 supplements
  • Exercise as vigorously as possible on a regular basis.
  • Avoid sugar and high glycemic foods.

Hmmm.  Sounds like what we have been saying all along.  The low glycemic eating plan is not just good for weight loss — although it works for that.  It is good for your overall health and for keeping your body parts functioning for as long as you live.
