Happy Independence Day!  Today we celebrate our country’s freedom and think of the price our forefathers paid to acquire it.  Let’s also think of our personal freedom.  We don’t have to be the slaves of our appetites anymore. “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”  (Romand 6: 14)  That freedom didn’t come cheaply, either.  Our freedom from sin also came with the price of blood — the blood of Jesus.

And on a more physical level:  If you are careful, you can navigate the Fourth of July cookout without losing ground. Enjoy the hamburger patty, but pass on the bun.  Put the pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. on the meat and eat it with a fork — or crumble it together in a bowl and make a meaty salad. Pass on the potato salad and chips, but enjoy the baked beans in moderation.  You can also have watermelon in moderation, or a small serving of the homemade ice cream.  Enjoy — and enjoy feeling great tomorrow!
