Robert Duvall is probably the best male American actor ofhis generation. He has a long list of great movies and TV specials, so it ishard to pick just ten from his massive oeuvre, but here we go.
1) TheApostle— an amazing performance and portrayal of a morally flawed Pentecostalpreacher.
2) LonesomeDove— The best TV western ever, in my book
3) Tender Mercies—- an Oscar worthy performanceand a touching story to boot.
4) SecondHand Lions— a heart warming film in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvallenjoy playing off of each other. A joy
5) Stalin—-One can only say wow about this performance. Could this really be the same manwho played the Apostle? An amazingtransformation and a clear example of an excellent actor being ‘in character’.
6) TheGreat Santini— Duvall doesn’t always play like-able characters, but he playsthem well. If you like military movies, this is interesting.
7) Godsand Generals— This Civil War epic is not perfect, but Robert Duvall issublime.
8) ToKill a Mockingbird—- I love this movie, and even though Robert Duvall onlyhas his first cameo appearance as Boo Radley, you can already see thepromise. You can see it in the episodeof the Fugitive he appeared in as well.
9) RamblingRose—- Not a great movie but both Duvall’s and Laura Dern’s performances aremust sees.
10) FallingDown— Again not a great movie, but a great performance by Duvall as an L.A. cop. You can really tell the difference in actingability between Duvall and Michael Douglas in this film.
