I had the good pleasure to talk with Ricky Skaggs last week.
The 14-time Grammy-winning country music legend’s latest album called Mosaic features a collection of Christian-themed songs that serve as a testament to a career and life grounded in faith.
Skaggs, 56, one of the best-selling stars the country music genre has ever produced (with 12 #1 country hits and 12 top 20 albums under his belt), told me that he believes Mosaic to be the most-important work he’s ever done because of the opportunity it has given him to reach people while praising the one God to whom he credits all his success. He views his own talent as a gift from the Creator to be used in His service.
As to the album, he compliments his co-producer Gordon Kennedy (no relation to yours truly) for writing it’s amazingly well-crafted and positive songs that he says really speak to the hearts of listeners. One guy in Texas, he recalls, told him that he was so moved by the music that he bought 25 Mosaic CD’s just to share with his family and friends.
He says that, while conservative Christians tend not to be held in very high regard in the secular music and entertainment industry, he’s happy to continue singing and performing the praise that’s in his heart — especially since audience reaction continues to be so positive.
Skaggs truly believes that people have a deep-rooted attraction toward positive music rooted in faith. The next great spiritual revival, he says, will not come from the churches but from the marketplace — as more and more people support faith-affirming culture and entertainment.
Among the inspirational songs found on Skaggs’ musical Mosaic are Fire from the Sky, Can’t Shake Jesus and Someday Soon. Click on the titles and enjoy the clips.
