It is kinda funny.
On this, the 100th birthday of the late great Mother Teresa, the Empire State Building is under fire from more than just the Catholic League. The organization, as you may remember, is holding a protest tonight regarding its owner’s refusal to mark the day with a symbolic blue and white light display (representing her religious order).
The building, of course, is known for such tributes — having utilized its legendary lights to note such events as the Chinese Revolution, World Oceans Day, the Belmont Stakes and the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz. But pay respect to a Nobel Peace Prize winner who spent her life in selfless service to the poor? Apparently that idea was just too off the wall for Anthony Malkin, the proprietor of the famous facility.
Anyway, Malkin has other problems — from above and from below — to deal with.
As Michael Daly reports in the New York Daily News, he’s currently engaged in a battle to prevent a proposed 1200 foot rival tower (just 25 feet shy of the Empire State) from going up nearby that would, ironically, block the view of his building’s iconic lights — while also negatively affecting the allure of the landmark structure’s observation deck.
From below there’s the problem of bedbug’s in the tower’s basement. That can’t be good for business.
Anyway, you may want to remember Mother Teresa today by reading some of the memorable things she said such as “Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift
to that person, a beautiful thing.” Simple, but true. Have a great day!
