I was doing my cursory flip through Newsweek when the headline in an ad caught my eye.
We all want the same thing.
I’ve been saying this same sentence for decades—to family, friends, clients, corporate audiences, church congregations, anyone who would listen. I truly believe this. Not only that, but I also believe that I know what that same thing is. Imagine my delight as I read the ad more carefully when I discovered that the answer provided by Rotary International’s ad is identical to mine!
We all want the same thing. Peace.
I truly do believe this. When all’s said and done, when all is boiled down to its brightest essence, what each being of every kind wants is peace.
To be honest, there’s a grave delusion about peace that needs correction. Most people think of peace as a form of homeostasis, a place to get to and take refuge in, somewhere safe and secure, but that’s not what I mean at all. To me, living in peace is the most dynamic way of being in the world. Peace is a living, breathing entity. Dynamic, not static. So far away from homeostasis as to be laugh-out-loud different.
You see, there’s a secret about genuine peace that has been little told. Living in peace means that we have NO IDEA what can happen. There’s no predicting it, no anticipating it. A dynamic peace is magic happening. Living in peace brings us right here, right now. There are requirements for living in this peace soup that we all want:
We get to show up, pay attention, give our greatest gifts generously, and allow life to become the shining wonder that it truly is. It is a way of living in radical trust.
The tag line in the Rotarians’ ad is: Humanity in motion. It could just as easily have read: Peace in motion. How about this for a further revision? Peace is motion.
Consider living in peace this day, and watch the magic happen.
