Churchgoers at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee had a surprise guest leading their worship service on Sunday. Grammy-winning artist Carrie Underwood joined her home church, which has several satellite locations, to lead worship, singing “Goodness of God” by Bethel Music. The music icon’s appearance on stage was a shock to many within the congregation, with one asking on social media “Do we go to church with Carrie Underwood?” Others posted Underwood’s performance, calling it a “blessing.” “Unexpected blessing this morning, the voice of an angel… I always get to church early to hear the music, and today was a little different!” wrote Emily Woods of Rolling Hills. The Bethel Music fan page also praised Underwood. “This was a sweet surprise, and it blessed me so much. It’s amazing to hear her sing about God, as her passion is very evident. I love this @bethelmusic song!”

Underwood’s faith began in childhood, where she grew up in a small Christian church in Oklahoma. She was a regular singer during worship services. She released her first Christian album, “My Savior” in 2021. She and her husband, Mike Fisher, have both been open about their Christian faith. The pair have been married since 2010. Fisher spoke with Christian Today in 2015 about his faith journey, saying for a long time he was just going through the motions. “I was trying to pretend that everything was great. Still going to church, but maybe be hung over, not really into it, but putting up kind of a façade,” he said. Luke 9:23-25 brought his life into perspective. The verse says, “If you want to be a follower of Me, you have to put aside your own selfish desires, shoulder your cross daily, and follow Me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. If you give up your life for Me, you will find true life. What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process?” Slowly, God helped to change him. “It wasn’t religion anymore. It was a real relationship.”

Underwood has said that their faith helps the two of them overcome their differences, such as Fisher’s passion for hunting while Underwood never thought she’d marry a hunter. “I think [faith] gives us a kind of center ground where that’s the most important thing in anything and your differences, if they’re rooted in that, I know your heart and you know my heart, there’s always a way and it’s usually it always is God working in it.”
