A Christian composer who has written music for Angel Studios and “Adventures in Odyssey” recently shared that he’s lost out on mainstream jobs because of his biblical beliefs. However, he noted that it was worth it because he stayed true to his faith.
A composer and actor, Aaron Fullan, told Christian Worldview Film Festival attendees, “Sometimes sticking to your guns in this industry will cost you. That is the harsh reality of being faithful to God’s calling in this industry.” Fullan has starred as an actor in dozens of films, including “Surprised by Oxford” and has composed music for numerous projects, including “Adventures in Odyssey.” He also created the famous jingle at the beginning of every Angel Studios release, including at the beginning of “The Chosen.”
Unfortunately, Fullan said he’d lost mainstream projects because of his beliefs. In 2017, Fullan said he was picked to be the composer for a new series by a major studio, even signing a contract. However, he knew he couldn’t do the job after receiving the script. He said, “I started seeing something unfold in the plot that I absolutely knew I wasn’t going to participate in. I showed my wife. We looked at each other, and I said, ‘I can’t do this.’”
Fullan told the filmmakers and executives he couldn’t do the project. According to Fullan, they weren’t pleased. The music supervisor called Fullan and said, “Are you kidding me? Are you purposefully wrecking your career?” Fullan said he told them, “No. But I’m a Christian. And the content in this is blatantly against everything I stand for.”
Fullan added that he lost another job with an Internet browsing company due to his social media posts. He said it was a great opportunity that paid well. However, three weeks into the project, he got a call from the creative director. Fullan said, “And she says, ‘I’m sorry, we can’t work with you.’… And she said, ‘One of the higher-ups at our company looked at your social media. And based on some of the content you have on there, decided you’re not a good fit for our company.’ So I’m like, ‘What happened in the last week that changed so dramatically?’ So I looked and looked and looked through my posts. And the only thing that I could see that would have been potentially controversial was I’m very vocally pro-life. And extremely so on my social media.”
According to Fullan, the company declined to confirm his thoughts. He continued, “This industry is often very anti-Christian depending on what circles you end up being in,” Fullan said. “If you commit to prioritizing God and His Word in your decision-making over worldly success, the adulation of man, you will be faced with some difficult decisions. But again, you will also be blessed in unimaginable ways because the Lord sees your commitment to Him and is honored by it.”
Fullan says he had to constantly remind himself of who he was serving, referencing the book of Daniel. He also said you’ll be confronted with challenging decisions but ultimately have to do what’s best for you.
