Supporters and opponents of a proposed Islamic community center built in Lower Manhattan faced off Sunday.
They staged dueling rallies near the proposed facility, which is to be built about two blocks from the site of the fallen World Trade Center.
Opponents who advocate relocating it or dropping the plan altogether feel it would be an insult to those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks if built near Ground Zero. Citing religious freedom, supporters say the developers have the right to build it and that they are not affiliated with al-Qaeda, the terrorist network responsible for the deadly coordinated attacks.
