My daughter Christina’s favorite part of the book is where I say that if we could TiVo our inner voice, we would realize that not even our worst enemies talk about us the way we talk to ourselves. I call this voice the obnoxious roommate, and we all have some version of her living in our heads. Mine is very snarky: when I look in the mirror in the morning, she never hesitates to point out a new wrinkle. The key to controlling this obnoxious roommate is through observation and humor: play with her, realize that it’s you who is in charge, not her. As my fearless mother, Elli, always told me, “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.”
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you let your obnoxious roommate dictate what you think of yourself? Take a moment to recognize what makes you uniquely you.
