I’m amazed that a guy like Donald Trump could be leading in the polls. But when I think about I’m not really amazed.
Many people like Donald Trump for the same reason they like religion. They like certainty.
Just like religion, Donald Trump speaks with authority. He speaks with certainty. He states things in black and white terms.
People want certainty in an uncertain world.
The problem, however, is that the world is uncertain. We can pretend it is otherwise. But, like it or not, the world was set up to be uncertain. It’s what allows us to be creative through the decision-making process.
When we look to others for certainty, we are really doing an enormous disservice to ourselves. We are giving away our power. We are giving away our creativity. We are letting others decide who we become. And the more of us that give away our power, the more power “others” have to create the world in which we live.
The one thing each of us enjoys, no matter who we are, is the power to create. It seems crazy that we would ever want to voluntarily give that power away. But we do so every time we blindly follow another for the sake of certainty.
