James Van Der Beek, the beloved actor known for roles in Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, has revealed he is battling colorectal cancer at the age of 47. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Van Der Beek shared his journey, saying, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.” Despite the gravity of his situation, Van Der Beek expressed hope: “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

Colorectal cancer is a serious illness that originates in the colon or rectum, a key part of the large intestine in the digestive system. While the diagnosis is daunting, Van Der Beek is approaching it with courage and faith, leaning on his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.

Even amid treatment, Van Der Beek has continued his acting career, appearing on Walker and preparing for the release of his next film, Sidelined: The QB and Me, a Tubi original set to premiere on November 29. In addition to his professional commitments, he has also embraced precious family moments. In June, the Van Der Beek family embarked on a memorable journey to Egypt, exploring the wonders of the pyramids and soaking in unforgettable experiences.

On Instagram, he reflected on the transformative trip, writing, “#Egypt… With all my vocabulary, ‘Wow’ is what fell out of my mouth most of the time. We were gifted a magical experience, one I’m still processing — and might be for the rest of my life. The kids were rock stars, my friends became brothers, and despite all the travel and time zone crossing and early-morning alarms, I feel recharged.”

Van Der Beek’s story of resilience continues with his involvement in The Real Full Monty, a special airing in December to raise awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer testing and research. The program will feature a group of male celebrities who strip down to encourage men to prioritize their health. Van Der Beek will be joined by actor Taye Diggs, Kansas City Chiefs star Chris Jones, and Dancing with the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli.

This effort is part of Van Der Beek’s commitment to using his platform for good. His participation is both a personal and public statement on the importance of cancer awareness and early detection. As Van Der Beek navigates his diagnosis, he remains a source of inspiration, demonstrating a faith-filled determination to embrace life’s blessings.
