Bishop T.D. Jakes, the renowned pastor of The Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas, has publicly credited God’s intervention and the swift action of medical professionals for averting what he described as a potentially fatal health incident.
Speaking to his congregation and followers on social media after the event, Jakes, 67, expressed profound gratitude for divine protection and medical care.
“I give thanks unto the Lord that I did not have a stroke,” Jakes said in a heartfelt statement, following what his church described as a “slight health incident” during Sunday morning service.
Serving God’s people is an extraordinary privilege, and Sunday was no exception as I gave my all in delivering the message God placed on my heart. The incident occurred as Jakes passionately delivered a message to his congregation, emphasizing his love for preaching and ministry. Moments before experiencing visible physical distress, including trembling in his hand, Jakes prayed the words of Psalm 19:14:
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”
In a video shared online, Jakes reflected on the profound joy he finds in preaching:
“Preaching is like going to visit someone in a hospital, thinking you’re going to encourage them, but they end up encouraging you. It’s a joy. I love you,” he said moments before medical assistance was called.
The Potter’s House released a statement confirming Jakes had received immediate medical attention and was in stable condition.
“The entire Potter’s House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers,” the church shared.
Following the health scare, Jakes announced his intention to rest and recuperate, reminding his followers of the biblical importance of Sabbath rest.
“I owe it to my amazing family and church members to rest and ruminate as He restores me towards His service,” Jakes shared on social media.
“Rest is not a weakness—it is a divine gift. As God calls us to honor the Sabbath, I’m reminded to embrace His grace and strength.”
Jakes also expressed awe and gratitude for the global community of friends and supporters who reached out with prayers and encouragement, affirming his commitment to continue God’s work.
The health incident came during an already turbulent week for Jakes. The day after the health scare, he filed a defamation lawsuit against former pastor and convicted sex offender Duane Youngblood. The lawsuit alleges that Youngblood made defamatory accusations about Jakes in an attempt to tarnish his reputation and extort millions of dollars.
Legal documents detail Youngblood’s history of misconduct, describing him as a “convicted criminal” engaging in a “carefully planned effort” to deflect blame for his actions while targeting Jakes.
Through it all, Jakes remains steadfast in his faith, pointing to God’s grace as the source of his resilience.
“God’s faithfulness was unmistakable to all those present. I am strengthened by His grace and the tremendous leadership team surrounding me as we press forward,” Jakes shared.
For his congregation and millions of followers worldwide, Jakes’ testimony reminds them of God’s providence in moments of weakness and the importance of honoring the Sabbath as a gift for renewal.
“While I continue to be strengthened by His grace, I stand in awe of the work He has set before us. Together, we move forward, steadfast in faith,” Jakes concluded.
