Catholics don’t “do” church signs very much — it’s pretty much a Protestant phenomenon.

But now someone has collected a few of the more memorable (and photogenic) ones in a book, The Great American Book of Church Signs.

The good folks at Beliefnet have put up a gallery of the signs.

They also describe the genesis (if you will) of the project:

Driving home from a tough day at the office, Donald Seitz glanced out his car window to read a church sign he was passing. “He who kneels before God can stand before anyone,” the sign said.

It was the right message at the right time for Seitz, and it inspired him to share the inspirational power of church signs. For three years, Seitz and his wife and son crisscrossed the entire country, snapping photos of church signs.

“The Great American Book of Church Signs” is a collection of Seitz’s 100 favorite photos from his journey. Click through our gallery to see highlights of church sign humor, insight, and inspiration.

Check out the Belifnet gallery. It will make you smile, and make you think.

Meantime, if you’d like a church sign of your own, for your website, drop by the Church Sign Generator to make your own. It’s easy and it’s fun (and if you look on my menu bar over on the right, you’ll find one for The Deacon’s Bench…)
