Last year, the Washington Post ran a remarkable story about an unusual experiment in the Washington, DC subway. The reporter asked one of the most celebrated violinists of his age to play his fiddle — a priceless Stradivarius — on the Metro platform while people were going to work. Would anyone notice?

It was a great story, wonderfully told, and I found myself inexplicably moved by it. I folded up the clipping and put it away in my “homily file,” knowing I’d want to put it to use someday after I was ordained.

And sure enough, in January, I preached a homily using that very story.

I was delighted to learn last month that the story won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. CWN has brought it again to our attention, with a link to the original piece.

Take and read. It’s a beautiful and thought-provoking piece of work.
