A couple years ago, I had a strange experience while giving out communion at mass: one of the congregants came up wearing a tee shirt from Hooters. Some people, of course, will wear anything to church.

Which brings me to political buttons.

Shortly after Labor Day, I began to notice a few people coming up for communion wearing Obama buttons. As time went on, the buttons got bigger. Now, I’m noticing something else: people beginning to wear McCain buttons.

It’s a disorienting experience, and sometimes makes me feel like I’m not at mass, but at a political rally. Has anybody else noticed this phenomenon at church?
