On CBS News tonight, Bob Schieffer spoke of how he attended segregated schools when he was growing up in Texas. “A black person had never attended any of my schools,” he said.
Correspondent Byron Pitts told Katie Couric about how his mother grew up in a world where a black woman could not look a white person in the eye. On Tuesday, he called his mother and asked her what she thought of the election, and she said, “Son, I have just four words for you: Glory, Hallelujah, Glory, Hallelujah.”
And then Byron showed a picture he has hanging in his office: striking garbage workers in Memphis in 1968. What a difference 40 years makes.
