It’s been a while since I found something blog-worthy in the world of MCPF Stephen Colbert.
So I was delighted to surf around this morning and find this choice nugget, about his recent address at Princeton:
There are two Stephen Colberts, and both of them appeared at Princeton University yesterday.
The first, an aggressive and ego centric conservative talk show host who is immune to irony, delivered the keynote address to university seniors at Class Day. Colbert was presented with an honorary degree and “The Class of 2008 Understandable Vanity Award,” a plaque with a large mirror on it.
“I have to say, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful,” Colbert said, gazing at it and his reflection.
His speech, which echoed many of the same positions he latches onto in his Comedy Central television show “The Colbert Report,” acknowledged the graduates’ po tential to change the world and challenged them to inaction.
“Please don’t do it,” he said. “As a middle-aged white Christian male, the world outside fits me like a glove.”
Colbert, who is 44, maintained that his own generation has shaped the world just the way they like it.
“We have worked long and hard to make the world comfortable for ourselves, and we don’t like when a new generation comes along and starts touching our stuff,” he said.
Stressing a desire to keep things as they are, he praised presidential candidate Barack Obama for apologizing when the views of pastors supporting his campaign drew controversy.
“You have to have the same courage to fight for what’s right, unless someone else doesn’t like it,” he said.
Another example cited by the observant Catholic was Jesus, who asked disciples to take up a cross and follow Him. But crosses look heavy.
“Wouldn’t it be easier for you to take up your remote control and follow me?” he asked.
Check out the link for the rest. And a cheerful tip of the mouse ears to Fr. Austin over at Jesus Goes to Disney World. I saw him there several times, Fr. A. I’ll have to blog about it soon.
