When I lost the last of my 160 pounds, I liked to say, “I danced it off.”  It’s true!  I had enrolled in a hospital program for overweight people, a behavior modification technique oriented class.  Part of it was a little class with a great teacher named Joan.

The class was great, only about 5 or 6 people, all of us “heavies.”  Joan was so sweet, gentle, and encouraging.  She played fun music and the moves were really easy.  The other “dancers” were really nice and welcoming, too.  One of them had already lost 100 pounds and was inspiring to me.  I loved that class so much I couldn’t wait to get there every week.

After a year of that class, and the behavior mod (or should I write “bod”) group, I had lost almost 50 pounds!  The class became too easy, and I started taking dance aerobics at my university.  That class is in my video, “Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss” which you may have seen.  Abby, the teacher, was a professional choreographer.  After some time passing of her getting used to me, initially thinking I was in the wrong room/wrong class! She got accustomed to me, and I to her, and I began to love full-out dancing.  By then, I’d lost my inhibitions.  I went twice a week, and also followed video tapes, and did yoga on the other days.  I was having a blast.

I recommend that you, too, sign up for classes.  If there’s a paid commitment, and a schedule, you may be more likely to get there.  Once arrived, you will likely find the classes to be a whole lot of fun.  There are other people like you, working on being their best, having fun together, and who knows – you may form some lifelong friendships, like I did.

Now, I take “Dances for a Variable Population” with another great professional choreographer, Naomi.  I try to go at least once or twice a week.  It’s a hard class, but my friends and Naomi make it terrific and fun.  It’s 90 minutes, but it goes by really quickly.

If you’d like to see me dance, check out my dance video on YouTube.  You may find it by clicking this paragraph. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12s4xUgWCv0

I would LOVE to hear about your dancing and moving, too.  Please post a comment below.  Come back often to read what other’s wrote about you, and their dancing, too.
