It’s simple: go for the complex carbohydrate, not the simple one!  Some carbs are actually healthy, contrary to some popular fad high-protein/low carb diets.  The point is to choose one that is healthy; one that offers some nutrition and not just harmful side effects.

“Simple” carbohydrates are only sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup, processed white, brown or “raw” sugar.  Those are the culprits that may lead to the now worldwide obesity crises.  You can find them in candy, millions of processed foods (not just desserts and sweets), and especially in fruit juices, and fruit “cocktails” and “beverages.”

“Complex” carbohydrates, like ones in fruit, also contain fiber, vitamins and minerals.  There is sugar, yes, but less sugar in actual fruit compared to baked or processed foods.

Simply put: choosing fruit instead of cakes, pies, cookies, candy, et al, is much smarter and healthier because:

  • Fruit gives you real nutrition.
  • There are vitamins and fiber in fruit.
  • Only empty calories in simple carbs (desserts and candy) that may make you fat.
  • Real fruit fills you up more.
  • Fruit calories give your brain positive energy; sugar and simple carbs in excess are addictive (see my article), and may lead to obesity, diabetes, and even certain cancers.
