Sometimes, it’s easy to get all wrapped-up in your problems.  You may be thinking a million thoughts: things you have to do, problems weighing on you, people to see, work, family, friends, your own misery and suffering, finding energy to get everything done, money, the house, career, parents, kids, pets, the list can go on and on.  (Please post some of your worries and problems here – unburden yourself. Then come back often to see responses and other concerns.  You’ll know you’re not alone.)

Here’s a weight loss idea for you, which may feel a little unusual.  Help someone else today. Get outside of yourself and offer a helping hand to someone else.

You might attend a Twelve Step meeting and help someone by listening to other’s worries and problems, and then commiserating and assuring them they’re not alone.  You could find a place to volunteer some time  at a church soup kitchen, thrift shop, hospital or homeless shelter.

May be helping a child would be really satisfying: volunteer to read a book, or hold an orphaned newborn, or become a Big Brother or Big Sister and mentor a child who has no parental role model.

Check out volunteer programs at your local library or senior citizen’s home, or community center.  Just an hour or two a week could really make a difference in someone’s life.

Getting outside yourself by helping others can help you, too.  Their appreciation is like golden balm for the soul.  Knowing that you are not alone in the human struggle, and assuring someone else that you care can mean so very much.

Helping others, I believe, is some of the best God-work that you can do.  By taking compassionate, loving and caring action means that you see and honor the God-Spirit in them.  Who knows, you may forget about your own problems and challenges for a little while, too.
