One of the simplest ways to save money on food is to eliminate impulse buying of foods you don’t need or aren’t good for you.  The way to only buy what you need is to take a little time to make a shopping list (and budget) before you go to the grocery store or supermarket.

Making a list of needed foods also helps you be more conscious of what you are eating.  I recommend dividing the list into food groups: carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy and fats/sugar.  Also, many food stores divide these groups into aisles or areas, which is logical.

If you are on a food plan, like the one in my book, “The Joy of Weight Loss,” you are likely to already be used to being conscious of what you are eating, making sure to eat in a very balanced way.  Making a shopping list helps this effort.

Planning ahead helps with cooking too.  You can organize your precious time more efficiently.  By making time to plan, and scheduling cooking time, you can make enough for several meals at a time, thereby really saving money and eating healthfully.  You will also need to go to the food store less, if you are more efficient every time.
