I recommend signing up for a recreation class, and faithfully attending it.  It’s like going to a party!  You can quickly make some friends, and move, and stretch and feel good.  It important to find the right group, though, where you fit in and feel comfortable.

When I was losing weight, seriously committing myself to do whatever it took, I found a recreation class for overweight people.  It was connected to a hospital program.  Every week there was a class that taught us how to eat well, and also worked to help us discover behaviors that were contributing to obesity.  As part of the classes, there was an extra group that met Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6-7, where we danced and moved.  It was so much fun, I got into the groove and loved it so much I wouldn’t miss it for anything.

The secret was that it was a group for seriously overweight and obese people.  Even though I had to lose upwards of 100 pounds, I was one of the lighter members.  The movements were exercise, but they didn’t feel like it.  It was just a lot of fun.  Good music, easy steps, some light stretches for an hour.  I found it was easy enough to do it, and everyone else did too.

I encourage you to find a group like I did.  If you’re seriously overweight or obese, connect with a program with folks in the same circumstance.  There are lots of programs out there that are excellent, low-cost or even free.

First: say prayers and ask God for His will to direct you to a group that you’ll love, that can help.  Then, do a little research: call your local hospital or healthcare facility.  Ask if there are any programs.  You could also consult a local community center, like a recreation center or community gym.  There are commercial groups, too, but there are fees with those, of course.

Please don’t put this off.  Don’t miss another moment of fun and connection with others.  Thinking of it as a wonderful treat for yourself that will really give you a lot of joy and satisfaction.
